Western Sahara may reconsider its involvement in the UN-sponsored process
The Frente POLISARIO has declared its readiness to reconsider its participation in the settlement process under the auspices of the United Nations in the event of further stagnation of the peace process and non-compliance with the Security Council resolutions on the referendum in Western Sahara, says Sahara Press Service. The Frente POLISARIO statement circulated stated that Western Sahara refused to participate in any political process not based on guaranteeing the right of its people to self-determination and independence and would oppose any international solution that was not in that interest. The National Bureau of POLISARIO also stressed the need for urgent intervention by the United Nations to release Western Saharan political prisoners in Morocco as soon as possible, pointing out that they were in danger as a result of the spread of coronavirus infection in Moroccan prisons. According to the news agency, in February, the President of the Saharan Arab Democratic Republic, the Secretary-General of the Frente POLISARIO, Brahim Gali, in talks with the Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, stated on the margins of the African Union summit that the Sahrawi people had lost confidence in the United Nations. The head of the World Organization, for his part, assured the leader of Western Sahara of the commitment of the United Nations to advance the political process.
